Women's Hockey Semifinal Predictions
3 of 3
United States vs. Sweden
The Americans have been the best team in this tournament, by far, steamrolling every opponent in between them and the gold medal to this point, including a 5-0 shut out of Canada in the preliminaries. They have the best scorers, in Caroline Harvey, Megan Keller, and Alex Carpenter, and the best goalie in these Olympics in Gwyneth Phillips.
Sweden will play quality defense early and may even momentarily fluster the Americans as they struggle to score right out of the gate, but Team USA will wear them out and eventually put the puck in the net, opening the floodgates for a potential four-or-five-point win.
Canada vs. Switzerland
The Canadians have not been the scoring machine that some expected them to be and have relied almost exclusively on their young players to necessitate goals. Still, they are a team focused on one thing: advancing to the finals and playing the United States.
In some cases, that would open the door or their opponent to upset them and win the game but Switzerland, for all of their strong play and a more-than-deserving run to the semifinals, simply does not have the firepower to keep up with Sarah Filling, Daryl Watts, and Julia Gosling, all of whom have scored five or more goals in these Olympics. Canada wins here to set up a marquee finale against the United States.
