Sam Darnold Dismisses Critics, 'I'm a Heck of a Player' After Seahawks' Super Bowl Win vs. Patriots

Doric SamFeb 9, 2026

After helping to lead the Seattle Seahawks past the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX on Sunday, veteran quarterback Sam Darnold isn't paying any attention to any critics that may remain.

"We're Super Bowl champs and people are still going to find something to say that I didn't do tonight," Darnold told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. "And I already know what I didn't do. I didn't throw it the way that I wanted to throw it tonight. But our defense had our back, and we made enough plays in the game. I'm very, very hard on myself that way. But at the same time, there is nothing that anyone can say that I don't already know about myself. And people may demote my talent or my ability. I know it's not true. I'm a heck of a player, and I've known that for a long time. And just to be able to put it all together, be on a really great team, great defense, and great coaches, it's just special. And I think that's why it's special, is because of the guys in the locker room and the coaching staff that we have."

After the game, cameras caught a touching exchange between Darnold and Seattle coach Mike Macdonald:

Interestingly, an old quote from one of Darnold's former coaches—Todd Bowles—resurfaced recently:

Darnold kept his mistakes to a minimum in the biggest game of his career, throwing for 202 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers on 19-of-38 passing to lead the Seahawks to a 29-13 win over the Patriots and the franchise's second Super Bowl title. He remained poised in the face of relentless pressure by New England, sustaining only one sack.

Winning a Super Bowl completes an epic comeback story for Darnold after he was considered a draft bust earlier in his career. He was selected third overall by the New York Jets in 2018, but he was traded just three years later.

Darnold had stints with the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers before enjoying a breakout season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024. When the Vikings allowed him to walk in free agency, he joined the Seahawks for what turned out to be a match made in heaven. He led Seattle to a 14-3 record and the NFC's No. 1 record before completing the journey to the mountaintop on Sunday night.

Darnold has officially been validated as one of the most reliable quarterbacks in the NFL today, and he will continue to ignore the critics as he tries to help the Seahawks win a second straight Super Bowl title next season.
