Vonn, who was already dealing with a ruptured ACL coming into the Olympics, suffered a brutal injury during her first run in downhill skiing on Sunday. After being airlifted off the mountain, Vonn underwent surgery to stabilize a leg fracture. The leg fracture was in the same leg she tore her ACL.
Vonn tore her ACL just over a week ago, but still opted to compete in the Winter Olympics.
While Vonn's injury was unfortunate, the United States still had something to celebrate on Sunday as Johnson won gold with a time of 1:36.10. She finished .04 seconds ahead of Germany's Emma Aicher. It marked the first gold medal for the 30-year-old.
