Olympic Figure Skating Results 2026, Ilia Malinin, USA Win Team Overall Gold
The Quad God wasn't at his best, but it was good enough.
The figure skating team event came down to the men's free skate, the final discipline in the competition, with the United States and Japan tied in total points. That meant a showdown between the favorite for individual gold, the United States' Ilia Malinin, and Japan's Shun Sato.
Malinin fell on a quad lutz but still scored an impressive 200.03 given the high degree of difficulty on the routine, which was enough to best Sato (194.86) and earn the gold medal for the United States for a second straight Olympics.
Japan took silver while host country Italy claimed the bronze after Matteo Rizzo scored higher than Georgia's Nika Egadze.
Kagiyama stunned the skating world on Saturday with a brilliant 108.67 points in the short program during the qualification round, besting the Quad God's 98.00 score. It certainly served notice that Malinin's quest for a gold wouldn't be without adversity. ย
Madison Chock and Evan Bates' first-place finish in the ice dance free skate gave the U.S. a five-point lead heading into the final day of the competition, but it didn't last.
Japan took first in the pair free skate, while the United States finished fourth, and Japan's Kaori Sakamoto took first place in the women's free skate. The United State's Amber Glenn finished third, and those two results pulled Japan even with the Americans heading into the final event.
But the Quad God brought it home, and he's yet to skate at his very best thus far at Milano Cortina. That makes him a formidable opponent come the individual competition.
