US Olympic Figure Skating 2026 Top Scorers, Reaction from Saturday's Team Event

The United States is still in charge of the figure skating team competition at the 2026 Winter Olympics after five events.

Team USA owns a five-point advantage over Japan after Madison Chock and Evan Bates delivered a marvelous performance in the ice dance free skate.

The Americans are expected to earn plenty of points through the men's and women's free skate portions of the competition on Sunday, so they are in good shape to claim gold.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates put in a fantastic performance in the ice dance free skate to open up the American advantage in the team event.

Chock and Bates produced a score of 133.23 with their free skate. They beat the closest competition by nine points.

Most importantly for the team competition, Japan finished fifth of five teams in the ice dance free skate. That allowed Team USA to move ahead by five points.

The United States and Japan dueled in the men's short program earlier on Saturday, as Yuma Kagiyama got the best of Ilia Malinin.

Kagiyama and Malinin might face off again in Sunday's men's free skate, but the participants have yet to be determined.

The same can be said about the pairs and women's free skate. The rosters for all three of Sunday's skates will likely be determined late on Saturday night once all the nations assess where they stand.

Team USA will likely stick with Malinin for the free skate, so it can earn the most points possible in the team event.

Amber Glenn could take over for Alysa Liu on the women's side. Glenn is the reigning American champion. Liu participated in the women's short program portion of the team event.

The Americans need the maximum points out of the men's and women's free skates because pairs is their biggest weakness of the four disciplines.

The United States and Japan will battle it out for gold. There's a fascinating competition between Italy, Georgia and Canada for the bronze medal that could come down to Sunday's final skate.
