Japan's Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara dominated the pairs figure skating event with a career best performance at the Winter Olympics on Friday, as United States duo Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea finished fifth in a dramatic session at the Milano Ice Skating Arena.

Miura/Kihara were last to perform in the short program that struggled to live up to expectations, but delivered a stunning 82.84 routine to land 10 points in the team event.

Kam/O'Shea added a useful six points with a score of 66.59, building on Madison Chock and Evan Bates' victory in the ice dance earlier in the day. The pair's routine included pulling off a spectacular triple twist, before Kam failed to land on the throw triple loop.

Defending champions Sui Wenjing and Han Cong kicked off proceedings with an ambitious routine that was blighted with two errors. Sui did well to recover from a terrifying fall for the second, with the iconic pair fighting back to finish sixth.

Georgia's Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava briefly threatened to take the win in the penultimate performance, toppling Sari Conti and Niccolo Macii, who lit up the arena for Italy.

Japan delivered with the pressure on, though, nailing a performance that was far clear of the rest and the only 80-plus pointer of the day.
