Peter King Reacts to Bill Belichick Snub, Pro Football Hall of Fame 'Is Wounded' Right Now

While the Super Bowl is Sunday, Bill Belichick's Hall of Fame snub continues to dominate headlines around the NFL.

Former NFL columnist Peter King, who retired from the Hall of Fame's selection committee after 32 years in 2024, was the latest to react and said, "The Hall, for the moment, is wounded," per Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic.

"What this tells me is that people love the Hall of Fame, they love their heroes and they want this to be done right."

If there was ever going to be a coach who would be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, it figured to be Belichick.

After all, the former New England Patriots head coach reached nine Super Bowls and won six Lombardi Trophies during his time with the team. He also won two Super Bowls as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, and his 333 regular season and playoff wins are second in league history behind only Don Shula's 347.

This was the first year he was eligible for selection, but ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham reported last Monday he did not receive the 40 of 50 votes necessary for induction. He wasn't the only Patriots legend to miss the Hall this year, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that team owner Robert Kraft also didn't receive enough votes.

Belichick was essentially going against Kraft and three senior player nominees in Ken Anderson, L.C. Greenwood and Roger Craig. Voters were asked to vote for three of the five candidates, and anyone who received 80 percent of the votes would then be selected.

Vahe Gregorian of the Kansas City Star explained he "didn't vote against Belichick or Kraft" but instead "voted for three three senior candidates."

As for King, this isn't the first time he reacted to Belichick's snub.

In the initial report from Van Natta and Wickersham, he said, "Holy f---! ... I'm very, very surprised.

He also pointed out, "It pushes all three of these coaches back a year. You have to ask yourself: What does the coaches committee do next year? Are they going to again advance Belichick? Wouldn't it be embarrassing if they don't? ... This decision has a major impact beyond just one year."

It would be stunning if Belichick isn't elected to the Hall of Fame as soon as next year, but it was also stunning he didn't get elected this year.
