Medal Tally Olympics 2026 Predictions for Milano Cortina's Final Winter Medal Count

Joe TanseyFeb 5, 2026

Only a handful of countries are capable of topping the 2026 Winter Olympics medal table.

Norway's been the dominant country at the Winter Games of late due to its wealth of talent on skis.

Germany will challenge for the top spot because of its control over the sliding sports.

The United States typically casts a wider net of medal opportunities at the Winter Olympics. Most of the American focus will be on figure skating and ice hockey, but other sports, like snowboarding, will receive attention due to athlete performances.

IBU Cup Biathlon Sjusjoen - Single Mixed Relay

The target number of medals for a country to win the overall medal table is 35.

Norway captured 37 medals to top the 2022 Winter Olympics medal table. That was 10 more than Germany in second place and 12 more than Team USA in third.

The bulk of Norway's medals will come from biathlon and cross-country skiing, two sports it has traditionally dominated.

Norway will also mix in some medals in ski jumping and other events in the alpine arenas.

Germany has control of the sliding track in luge, bobsled and skeleton. There's a chance the Germans could sweep all the gold medals in each of the three sliding sports.

The United States carries a more diverse collection of potential medal winners from figure skating to ice hockey to snowboarding.

A lot of the American focus will be on figure skating, where Team USA will be favored in three events and has a good chance to win a fourth.

The United States is the winningest country by a large margin in snowboarding. Multiple golds are expected from the halfpipe, slopestyle and big air events.

All three nations should easily get to 25 medals. How high each nation climbs in the medal table is dependent on how much support they get from their secondary sports.

Predictions

Norway - 38

Germany - 29

United States - 28

Gold Medal Predictions

2026 Winter Olympics - Milan-Cortina

The United States enters Milan with a handful of heavy gold-medal favorites.

Ilia Malinin should win gold in men's figure skating, while Madison Chock and Evan Bates are favored to win the ice dance.

The Americans are almost guaranteed to win the team figure skating competition for the second straight Olympics as well.

Chloe Kim, Red Gerard and a handful of other snowboarders will try to add to the gold-medal haul. Jordan Stolz is expected to win at least one gold in speed skating.

The United States typically competes well in freestyle skiing and the alpine skiing events as well.

The big swing for Team USA will come in ice hockey, where the men's and women's team could both do battle with Canada in their respective finals.

If the Americans win both hockey events, they could come away with the most golds in Milan.

Norway banked 11 golds across the biathlon and cross-country skiing events in 2022. A similar number is expected to buoy its gold-medal count in 2026.

Germany earned nine of its 12 golds in Beijing on the sliding track. We shouldn't expect much else from the Germans in terms of gold-medal success.

The United States could very well end the Olympics with the most golds, but that may be dependent on the hockey finals on the last two days of the Games.

Predictions:

Norway - 11 golds

Germany - 10 golds

United States - 10 golds
