The 2026 Winter Olympics are set to officially begin with Friday's opening ceremony. While the world will be captivated by the two-plus weeks of action in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, it's never too early to look ahead at what comes next.

In a little over two years, the Summer Olympics will be back and making a return to Los Angeles, California, for the third time. L.A. hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984.

Around The Games - Olympic Games Paris 2024: Day 15

The Los Angeles Olympic Committee unveiled its logo at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. What's interesting about the 2028 logo is that it isn't static. Fans will see many different iterations of the LA28 logo.

From TheOlympicDesign.com:

"It is composed of the text 'LA 28' and the Olympic rings. While the letter 'L' and the figure "28" are stable, the 'A' is interchangeable, to reflect the diversity and many faces of Los Angeles. Leading figures from the worlds of sport, entertainment, the economy and the arts helped to create the emblem by contributing their own personal 'A'."

It's a creative design that will allow for plenty of individual expression while still being instantly recognizable—and fans can probably have tons of fun coming up with their own versions.

The 2028 Olympics are set to kick off with the opening ceremony on July 14 at SoFi Stadium and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. While details about the opening ceremony are sparse at this point, we know that 13-time Emmy-winning producer Ben Winston is set to produce the event.

Fans can also expect the production team to lean into the Hollywood aesthetic.

"There is no event of this scale in the world. We also are putting it on in Hollywood, which has a unique opportunity to tap into the entertainment world that no other city anywhere can do," head of ceremonies Peter Rice said, per Cynthia Littleton of Variety.

During the games themselves, fans will be treated to several new events, in addition to returning events like Athletics, Swimming, Skateboarding, Gymnastics, Diving, Taekwondo, and Fencing.

Headlining the list of new sports is Flag Football, which has been heavily hyped by the NFL.

The list of new sports also set to be part of the 2028 Olympics includes Squash and Lacrosse. Baseball, Softball, and Cricket are also expected to return at the Los Angeles Games.

Fans may see some of their favorite MLB stars playing in the Olympic baseball tournament. The league is interested in working out a partnership, as the NHL recently did, allowing its stars to participate in the Milano Cortina Games.

"I think that the idea of playing in L.A. in '28, regardless of the merits of the possibility of ongoing Olympic participation in another location, that there's some merit to it," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. "I think it is an opportunity to market the game on a really global stage."

A few new events in existing sports will also debut in L.A., including mixed-gender compound bow (Archery), the 4x100m mixed relay (Athletics), mixed-team Artistic Gymnastics, and mixed-team Table Tennis.

Fans can find a complete look at the 2028 events and an early event schedule at LA28.org.
