Cahill Injury Amplifies Chelsea Defensive Woes
With Kurt Zouma and John Terry also sidelined, Matt Miazga paired with Branislav Ivanovic during the recent win over Aston Villa. Baba Rahman also entered the starting XI, as Hiddink was forced to make major changes to his defence.
Cahill has been Chelsea's defensive rock since Zouma went down with an injury, usually pairing with Terry in the middle of the back four. While Terry is still a capable defender, he also turned 35 during the 2015-16 campaign, and he has shown his age at times. Cahill has been largely responsible for making sure the defence doesn't fall to pieces.
The England international started 33 of Chelsea's 38 Premier League matches in their triumphant campaign last season, per WhoScored.com, showing his value to the squad when he's at his best and healthy.
