Pete Carmichael, Bills Reportedly Agree to Contract as OC for Josh Allen, Joe Brady

Mike ChiariJan 30, 2026

The Buffalo Bills hired Denver Broncos senior offensive assistant Pete Carmichael Jr. as their offensive coordinator on Friday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Carmichael has extensive experience as an NFL OC, serving in that role under Sean Payton with the New Orleans Saints from 2009 to 2021, and he remained in that position for two additional years after Payton stepped down.

Then, Carmichael made the move to Denver in 2024 to coach under Payton once again.

New Bills head coach Joe Brady, who was introduced Thursday, was on the Saints' staff with Carmichael from 2017 to 2018, serving as an offensive assistant.

Brady already confirmed that he will continue to call Buffalo's offensive plays in 2026 after serving as the team's offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.

Carmichael is no stranger to being an OC without play-calling duties, as that was the case for the vast majority of his tenure as Saints offensive coordinator under Payton.

Still, Carmichael had a great deal of success in New Orleans, helping lead an offense that finished in the top five in total yardage eight times and in the top five in scoring eight times.

The 54-year-old Carmichael was also on staff when the Saints won their first and only Super Bowl in franchise history at the conclusion of the 2009 season.

Getting over the proverbial playoff wall and winning the Super Bowl has been the Bills' main goal for the past several years.

While Buffalo has made seven consecutive playoff appearances, it has not gotten past the AFC Championship Game, which led to the decision to fire head coach Sean McDermott.

In quarterback Josh Allen, the Bills have one of the best players in the league, as he won NFL MVP last season and is a finalist once again this season.

Carmichael coached Drew Brees for many years in New Orleans, and he is likely to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer this year.

Now, Carmichael will have a chance to coach another potential future Hall of Famer in Allen, but the one major accolade missing from his résumé is a Super Bowl win.

The Bills made a coaching change in hopes of getting Allen to the big game, and Carmichael figures to have a big impact on his success next season even without calling the plays.
