Latest 49ers Rumors Link Raheem Morris, More to DC Job After Robert Saleh Hired by Titans

Paul KasabianJan 29, 2026

The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly interviewed Raheem Morris, Joe Woods and Gus Bradley for their defensive coordinator position, which is open after Robert Saleh left to become the Tennessee Titans' head coach.

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area delivered the news.

Morris just served as the Atlanta Falcons' head coach for two seasons, leading them to an 8-9 record each year. Atlanta parted ways with him and general manager Terry Fontenot after the end of last season.

The 49-year-old has coached in the NFL since 2007. He became the NFL's youngest head coach in 2009 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the time at age 32. Morris spent three seasons in Tampa before the Bucs parted ways with him after a 17-31 stretch.

Morris then worked as Washington's defensive backs coach for three seasons before heading to the Falcons, serving a variety of capacities before getting the call to be defensive coordinator (and then interim head coach) in 2020 after Dan Quinn was fired.

Morris then won his first-ever Super Bowl in 2021 when he worked as the Los Angeles Rams' defensive coordinator. He remained in that position until heading back to Atlanta.

The 55-year-old Woods most recently worked as the Las Vegas Raiders' defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. He's coached college and the NFL since 1992. Woods has been a defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos (2017-2018), Cleveland Browns (2020-2022) and New Orleans Saints (2023-2024).

His position specialty is defensive backs, and he's coached them for the Minnesota Vikings (2016-2013), Raiders (2014, 2025) and Broncos (2015-2016) in the NFL.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan previously told reporters after Saleh left that there is an "obvious" candidate at DC, and that's 49ers assistant head coach Gus Bradley.

"I'm going to say it's a real wide net but Gus is the obvious one to everyone and is to us too," Shanahan said, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

"Gus would be the main internal candidate. We feel fortunate to get Gus and great about that. We are going to go through the whole process. There's requirements we have to do and stuff that we want to do, also. So, hopefully, we can get it settled sooner than later."

The 59-year-old has served as a DC for the Seattle Seahawks (2009-2012), Los Angeles Chargers (2017-2020), Raiders (2021) and Indianapolis Colts (2022-2024).

In between the Seahawks and Chargers' gigs, Bradley was the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coach (14-48 in four seasons).

Bradley moved to the 49ers in 2025 to work on Shanahan's staff. The 49ers were No. 13 in scoring defense despite superstars Nick Bosa (three games played) and Fred Warner (six games) missing nearly all of the season due to injury.
