Von Miller Signs Cowboys Contract in New Photo, Updated Salary Cap Amid 2026 NFL Preseason

Eight-time Pro Bowler Von Miller is joining the Dallas Cowboys, with ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reporting that the two sides agreed to a one-year deal.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the two sides agreed to a $5.5 million contract, which can top out at $7.5 million.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the deal.

Before the deal, the Cowboys had $18.5 million in cap space remaining, per Overthecap.com.

Following the conclusion of Washington's season, Miller said he was planning to keep playing into 2026. He expressed his hope of reuniting with the Washington Commanders but acknowledged a lot of factors were at play:

Aligning with Dan Quinn, somebody with a wealth of experience coaching on the defensive side, proved to be a sound decision for Miller. He finished 2025 with nine sacks, his most since 2021.

All total, the 37-year-old only played 36.9 percent of the Commanders' defensive snaps. His effectiveness as a pass-rusher speaks for itself, though. He may no longer be at his peak, but he still possesses enough skill and athleticism to elude blockers off the edge.

Miller's legacy is already secure at this point. He's a three-time All-Pro, the Super Bowl 50 MVP and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's All-Decade team for the 2010s. Eventually, he's going to have a bust in Canton, Ohio.

Climbing the all-time sack list might nonetheless be a source of motivation.

With 138.5 for his career, Miller is tied with DeMarcus Ware for ninth in the official record, which dates back to 1982. Registering four sacks in 2026 would move him up into sixth, past Terrell Suggs, Jason Taylor and Michael Strahan.

Chris Doleman is in fifth with 150.5 sacks, and that number might be attainable if Miller comes back for 2027 as well.

The Cowboys know what they're getting with Miller. He can't be an every-down defender anymore but clearly has situational value off the bench.

The veteran sack artist should be a solid addition to the front seven.
