Running back Najee Harris will look to make his comeback from last fall's season-ending Achilles injury with the New York Giants.

Harris and the Giants agreed to a contract on Tuesday, with NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reporting the two sides agreed to a one-year deal.

"Am I fully in football shape? No, I just got my pads today," Harris said, per ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "There's a difference between getting in shape and in football shape because it's hard to replicate pads in the offseason other than just putting it on and going out there and work. So, can I go out there and run some plays? Of course I can. But am I where I want to be, like [where] Najee wants to be at? No, probably not.

"It's not going to take a long time. It doesn't take a long time for me to get in shape. I take that seriously. I'm committed to that."

Giants head coach John Harbaugh praised Harris on Monday following the workout:

"He looked good in the workout," Harbaugh said, per Raanan. "You know, he's not back 100%. He's not in football shape yet. So, if we are able to do something, it'll be a process.

"But that would be a guy that has got a lot of experience. He's a decorated vet. And with those guys, generally, you just have to kind of see where they're at when you get them. And sometimes it works out great. Sometimes it's just OK, and other times it doesn't work out. But based on the workout, I would say we feel like he's got a shot. We'll just have to see how it goes."

Harris also spoke about his fit on Harbaugh's squad, per Raanan:

"I think this is a good opportunity here," Harris said. "I think the style of play that they're heading towards is the style of play that aligns with me. I know the type of style of football [Harbaugh] wants. I think that we align with each other with what type of football we want to play."

Harris reportedly visited with the Seattle Seahawks and Las Vegas Raiders in free agency.

This news comes one day after the team waived/injured running back Dante Miller.

Here's a look at the updated depth chart:

  • Cam Skattebo
  • Tyrone Tracy Jr.
  • Devin Singletary
  • Najee Harris
  • Eric Gray
  • Damon Bankston

Last offseason, Harris signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract worth up to $9.25 million with incentives with the Los Angeles Chargers.

He didn't get a chance to hit any of those incentives before he went down with a season-ending torn Achilles on Sept. 21 during a Week 3 matchup with the Denver Broncos.

The Achilles tear marked the first major NFL injury for Harris, who had started 68 straight regular-season games and three postseason matchups over four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers ultimately decided to let Harris walk after the expiration of his rookie contract, setting up the running back to sign what he hoped would be a one-year prove-it deal in Los Angeles.

The Chargers seemingly moved on from Harris this offseason by signing Keaton Mitchell to join Omarion Hampton and Kimani Vidal in the backfield.

Harris will now look to take another shot at earning his next major contract once he is able to return from injury by building on his consistent success with the Steelers.

The former Steelers cornerback topped 1,000 rushing yards in each of his first four NFL campaigns, including a 2021 rookie season during which he earned a Pro Bowl nod while racking up a career-high 1,200 yards on the ground.
