Super Bowl Champ Tyrann Mathieu Reveals Drinking Bleach to Try to Trick Drug Test in Viral Video

Julia StumbaughJan 29, 2026

Former NFL safety Tyrann Mathieu opened up about his struggles to hide his drug addiction during his LSU playing career in a Tuesday episode of In the Bayou With Tyrann Mathieu.

Mathieu said around the 18:15 mark of his podcast that he "nearly died" after drinking bleach in an attempt to pass a drug test at LSU.

According to Mathieu, he had been searching for a way to pass a drug test when he came across an online suggestion to drink Coca-Cola with a "little bit of bleach" mixed in.

"I end up throwing that s--t up," Mathieu said. "And at that point I'm like, man, f--k it. I've run out of tricks. I don't know what to do.

"I remember sitting in front of that building with a f--king cap full of bleach and a coke bottle. And I thought that was going to save my life. It didn't. It backfired."

Mathieu played two seasons as a cornerback for LSU, including a Heisman finalist campaign in 2011, before he was dismissed ahead of his junior season following multiple failed drug tests.

He has since been open about his struggles with marijuana addiction and subsequent rehab.

Mathieu went on to be selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2013 draft.

He played 12 seasons and three Pro Bowl campaigns in the NFL, and won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2019 season, before announcing his retirement from the league last July.
