Latest Rumors on Shedeur Sanders, Browns' QB Plans After Todd Monken HC Contract

Zach BacharJan 28, 2026

The Cleveland Browns are expected to add to the team's quarterback room of Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and Deshaun Watson after hiring Todd Monken as head coach on Wednesday, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

"I expect the Browns to add there, I think the shake-up will be there regardless of whether it was Monken or somebody else," Fowler reported during a radio appearance on ESPN Cleveland. "Whether it's trying to swing a trade or a Malik Willis-type in free agency. Or investing in the draft, like Ty Simpson from Alabama. There are options out there even if it seems somewhat bleak. I expect that shake-up to happen in some regard."

Sanders started the final seven regular-season games for Cleveland during its 2025 campaign, but isn't expected to be locked into the top spot on the team's depth chart heading into training camp.

"I don't believe that this organization is all-in on Shedeur," Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported Wednesday on the Scoop City podcast (10:00 mark).

While Sanders was selected as a Pro Bowl replacement following his rookie season, he still showed some room for improvement.

He completed 56.6 percent of his throws for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions, averaging 6.6 yards per attempt. Sanders also tossed two touchdowns while getting picked off seven times over his final four starts.

It's understandable that the Browns could explore external options at quarterback as they look to improve an offense that ranked No. 31 among all NFL teams in 2025 by averaging a mere 16.4 points per game.
