The comments come on the heels of ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham reporting on Tuesday that Belichick won't make the Pro Football Hall of Fame because he didn't receive the minimum 40 votes needed for induction.
Van Natta and Wickershams' report notes the Patriots' two cheating scandals, known as Spygate and Deflategate, during Belichick's tenure as head coach were mentioned in deliberations among the selection committee.
It was also noted that Bill Polian, a Hall of Fame general manager best known for his tenures with the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts, told some voters that Belichick should have to "wait a year" as a result of the Spygate scandal.
ESPN's Courtney Cronin pointed out that the Pro Football Hall of Fame does not have a formal morality clause as part of its mission statement.
NFL insider Ollie Connolly tracked the list of Hall of Fame voters who confirmed either a "yes" or "no" vote for Belichick.
Based on the tracking results from Connolly, Belichick didn't come close to hitting the necessary threshold for induction with only 13 "yes" votes from the 50-person panel.
It's certainly a stunning turn of events for arguably the most successful coach in NFL history.
Belichick spent 29 years as a head coach between the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots. His 333 combined wins in the regular season and playoffs are the second-most all-time, trailing only Don Shula (347).
He won a record six Super Bowl titles in nine appearances with the Patriots. If you include his time as an assistant coach with the New York Giants, his Super Bowl count goes up to eight.
There are only five teams in NFL history that have appeared in at least eight Super Bowls, with one of them being the Patriots team that Belichick was the head coach for from 2000 to '23.
