Djokovic Advances After Musetti Injury, Updated Australian Open Men's Tennis Bracket, Results
An injury to Lorenzo Musetti allowed Novak Djokovic to reach the semifinals of the 2026 Australian Open.
Musetti won the first two sets before falling behind 3-1 in the third and was down 40-15 in the fifth game when he was forced to retire.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Musetti explained he believes the injury is a torn adductor that occurred early in the second set when he felt something in his right leg.
"I felt it at the beginning of the second set," Musetti said. "I felt there was something strange in my right leg. I continued to play, because I was playing really, really, really well, but I was feeling that the pain was increasing, and the problem was not getting away."
Despite advancing, Djokovic admitted afterward that Musetti was by far the better player in the match.
The box score stats for the match emphasize how much better Musetti was playing. Djokovic committed 31 unforced errors and had a 25-19 disadvantage in winners through the first two sets.
Musetti initially called for the trainer to come out after the second game in the third set. He received treatment and tried to play through it, but he was only able to make it through one more game before stopping.
Djokovic was also going through his own physical issues. The 10-time Australian Open champion took a medical timeout after dropping the second set to receive treatment for a blister on his right big toe.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Djokovic said he doesn't anticipate the blisters will be an issue going forward.
This marks the second straight match that Djokovic has advanced as a result of an injury to his opponent. Jakub Mensik had to withdraw prior to the fourth round due to an abdominal injury.
Djokovic's next test will be against No. 2 Jannik Sinner in the semifinals on Friday. Sinner has won five straight head-to-head meetings against Djokovic, including a four-set victory in the 2024 Australian Open semis.
If Djokovic goes on to win, he will tie Margaret Court's record with 11 career Australian Open titles.
