Mike McDaniel 'Geeked' to Work with Justin Herbert After Chargers OC Contract, Talks QB's Ceiling

Mike McDaniel is settling into his new role as the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator, and part of his first week with the team included speaking to quarterback Justin Herbert over the phone.

It's safe to say he's excited to work with his new quarterback.

"We're both geeked for the future and the possibilities," McDaniel told reporters Tuesday.

McDaniel added that the 27-year-old Herbert "hasn't neared the ceiling to what he's capable of."

McDaniel was fired by the Miami Dolphins at the conclusion of the 2025 season, a year that saw Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa put together one of the worst campaigns of his career.

Herbert, on the other hand, had a strong year, posting 3,727 passing yards and 26 touchdowns along with 498 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. He led the Chargers to an 11-6 record, but Los Angeles lost to the New England Patriots in the wild-card round.

While Herbert has been a more than capable starting quarterback for his entire career, he's still looking to reach another level and turn the Chargers into a Super Bowl contender. McDaniel seems to believe he can do that.
