Latest NFL Rumors on Jets, Frank Reich After Tanner Engstrand Fired as Aaron Glenn's OC

Andrew PetersFeb 1, 2026

The New York Jets reportedly are moving swiftly to find their next offensive coordinator after firing Tanner Engstrand on Tuesday.

According to SNY's Connor Hughes, the Jets have "zeroed in on" Frank Reich, who spent the 2025 season as the interim head coach at Stanford. According to Hughes, a deal "does eventually get done," though it won't be immediate.

The Jets will also reportedly hold in-person interviews with Greg Roman and Darrell Bevell:

All three were among the five candidates who completed virtual interviews for the position as of Wednesday:

Reich remains a top candidate, however, and if he takes over he could have full say in what goes on on the offensive side of things.

"He has told them he is looking for a 'head coach of the offense.' That's what he wants," Hughes said (21-minute mark).

Other candidates also have significant experience as play-callers. Greg Roman has 12 seasons as an NFL offensive coordinator, including the last two with the Los Angeles Chargers. Darrell Bevell has been an offensive coordinator at four different NFL stops before spending the past four years as the pass-game coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.

Ronald Curry and Lunda Wells are both seeking their first coordinator jobs at this level.

According to a handful of reports, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and Engstrand had discussions about his role and whether he could step into a position other than offensive coordinator, but New York ultimately opted to move on from him completely.

Engstrand is one of many coaches to have lost their job since the end of the season. Some of those coaches were blindsided by their firings.

"Various coaches were told at the end of the season that they were free to explore other opportunities—though many still felt they were safe as of last week based on conversations they'd had with Glenn," The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reported. "At some point in the last week or so, multiple sources said they felt Glenn changed course on his original plan for the offseason. At the end of the week, various position coaches were fired—and at least a few of them were surprised at that happening."

Even before Engstrand's firing, Reich was the reported name to watch for the offensive coordinator job. Given his experience, he's not a bad option.

Reich, whose playing career ended in 1998, brings nearly two decades of coaching experience to the table. He was the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive coordinator when they won the Super Bowl in 2017 and was the Indianapolis Colts' head coach from 2018 to 2022.

He was the head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2023 but was fired mid-season, prompting his move to join Stanford.

If the Jets make things official with Reich, he'll have his hands full trying to turn things around. New York had one of the worst offenses in the league in 2025 as it finished 3-14.
