Sean Payton Trolls Davis Webb Amid Raiders HC Rumors, 'Would Be a Pain in the Ass For Him'

Joseph ZuckerJan 27, 2026

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton offered some helpful — or not so helpful advice — to Davis Webb as his assistant coach is linked with the Las Vegas Raiders' vacancy.

Payton quipped Tuesday that taking the Raiders job "would be a pain in the ass for him."

Payton's remark possesses multiple layers.

He may have joking around in the hope Webb sticks around as the offensive passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He could've been dishing out some early trash talk with Payton and Webb potentially coaching in the same division. Or the Super Bowl XLIV champion could've been warning about the Raiders specifically.

If it's the last of those three options, that's not a bad recommendation.

Being the coach to take the Raiders back to the Super Bowl is certainly a tantalizing prospect. Even after all these years, the franchise still possesses a special aura.

But the franchise has cycled through four permanent head coaches just since its move to Las Vegas in 2020. It hasn't won a playoff game since reaching the Super Bowl in 2002.

The appearance of empowering minority owner Tom Brady may not allay the concerns about the organizational structure in place, either. Appearing Monday on The Rich Eisen Show, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero said some candidates are coming away asking, "Who exactly is running the building?"

After a nondescript playing career in the NFL, Webb's stock has risen quickly as a coach. He joined Denver's staff in 2023 and is already getting interviews to be a head coach.

The 31-year-old can afford to bide his time and wait for the right opportunity if he wants. Listening to what Payton said may be a sound decision.
