NFL Fans Question Josh Allen's Super Bowl Hopes After Bills Hire Joe Brady to Replace McDermott

Football fans weighed in Tuesday after the Buffalo Bills promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to their vacant head coaching position.

After the news broke, X was flooded with posts about the belief that the hire will not help Bills superstar quarterback Josh Allen get over the hump and into a Super Bowl:

Brady is replacing Sean McDermott, who went 98-50 with eight playoff appearances and five AFC East titles in nine seasons at the helm.

Buffalo was never able to make it past the AFC Championship Game under McDermott, though, and owner Terry Pegula made the decision to move on following the Bills' 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Brady, 36, has been part of the Bills' coaching staff since 2022, following a stint as the passing game coordinator at LSU and the Carolina Panthers' offensive coordinator.

He started off as the Bills' quarterbacks coach before becoming interim offensive coordinator in 2023 following the firing of Ken Dorsey. The interim tag was then removed, and Brady served as the full-time OC the past two seasons.

With Brady calling the offensive plays, Buffalo ranked 10th in total offense and second in scoring offense in 2024, and fourth in both total offense and scoring offense this season.

Under Brady's guidance, Allen was the NFL MVP last season, and he is an MVP finalist once again this season.

Allen achieved that success without a true No. 1 wide receiver after the departure of Stefon Diggs, and a big reason for that was Brady's development of the running game.

The Bills led the NFL in rushing offense this season, and running back James Cook won the rushing crown with 1,621 rushing yards.

Given all of those factors, some posters on X did express optimism that Brady could prove to be a quality hire:

Of course, Brady will be measured against McDermott and other candidates who either interviewed or were expected to interview for Buffalo's vacancy.

That includes former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll, Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, Denver Broncos pass game coordinator Davis Webb, Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase and Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.

Now, the focus shifts toward Brady building a staff, and there will be particular interest surrounding the defensive coordinator hire since McDermott was a defensive coach who implemented his own system.
