Chelsea Transfer News: Jose Mourinho's Summer Targets Named in Latest Rumours

Rory MarsdenAug 1, 2015

Chelsea are clearly in the market for a new left-back following Filipe Luis' return to Atletico Madrid after just one season at Stamford Bridge.

There are seemingly two front-runners to fill the backup role behind Cesar Azpilicueta on the left of Jose Mourinho's defence, but it is unclear as to who the Blues will eventually sign, with the latest reports suggesting either deal could be close.

John Cross in the Mirror claims Chelsea are now "closing in" on the £20 million signing of Augsburg's Abdul Baba Rahman, citing German reports relayed by Sky Germany's Jan Aage Fjortoft:

Mourinho was previously coy on the matter but did suggest Baba Rahman was a potential target, per Cross"He is Augsburg player so I don’t speak. But we try. We don’t have, we have only one left-back. We are trying."

Just 21 years old, Baba Rahman made 31 appearances in Augsburg's fifth-placed Bundesliga campaign in 2014-15, providing four assists, per WhoScored.com.

It was an impressive season for the Ghanaian, and it is unsurprising that Chelsea are interested in him as he could be a terrific investment for the future.

However, £20 million seems like a lot of money for the young left-back, especially as the Blues reportedly baulked at an asking price of £15 million for Baba Rahman, per Jack de Menezes in the Independent.

A cheaper target who has also been heavily linked with Chelsea is Galatasaray's Alex Telles. The 22-year-old Brazilian's agent, Fernando Otto, has seemingly hinted at a potential move for Telles to west London, per Eurosport Turkey (h/t Metro's Louis Sealey): "There are clubs that are making offers although none have been official and he could play for Chelsea and PSG without using a foreign player space due to having an Italian passport but he is happy at Galatasaray."

Galatasaray are apparently willing to listen to offers above €10 million (£7 million), thus making Telles a considerably cheaper prospect than Baba Rahman.

He would be a good addition to Mourinho's squad as he is a very capable left-back who offers a great deal going forward, per Bleacher Report's Andy Brassell:

With Azpilicueta still set to be the undisputed No. 1 left-back at Chelsea no matter who they bring in, the Blues can afford to be forward-thinking with their choice of backup.

They are not going to sign both Telles and Baba Rahman, but either would be a decent signing, as they have bags of potential.

Furthermore, unlike the older Luis, neither would likely feel aggrieved at having to play second fiddle to Azpilicueta, as they are young enough to be able to bide their time.

Telles perhaps looks the better signing simply because he is better value, but Baba Rahman is proven at a higher level having held his own in the Bundesliga.

It still remains unclear as to who Chelsea will go for, but they seem to have identified two superb options to replace the departed Luis.
