Naomi Osaka Withdraws With Injury, Updated Australian Open Women's Tennis Bracket, Results
Naomi Osaka's run at the Australian Open came to an end on Saturday due to an injury.
In a statement released prior to her third-round match against Maddison Inglis (h/t ESPN's Jake Michaels), Osaka announced she was withdrawing from the tournament:
"I've had to make the difficult decision to withdraw to address something my body needs attention for after my last match. I was so excited to keep going and this run meant the most to me, so having to stop here breaks my heart but I can't risk doing any further damage. Thanks for all the love and support. I'm so grateful everyone embraced me so much."
Inglis, who made it into the tournament as a qualifier, will play No. 2 seed Iga Świątek in the fourth round on Sunday. The 28-year-old Inglis and Wang Xinyu are the only remaining unranked players in the women's singles bracket.
Osaka didn't disclose the exact nature of the injury, though she did have to take a medical timeout in the second set of her victory over Sorana Cirstea on Thursday.
After defeating Cirstea, Osaka referenced a recurring issue as the reason for her medical timeout.
"I guess if you look at my medical history, you can maybe do like a little guessing game," Osaka said.
Osaka retired from her third-round match against Belinda Bencic at the 2025 Australian Open due to an abdominal injury. The 28-year-old ended last year withdrawing from the Japan Open prior to a quarterfinal match against Jaqueline Cristian due to a leg injury.
