Quentin Johnston's 5th-Year Contract Option Exercised by Chargers, 2027 Salary Revealed
The Los Angeles Chargers picked up the fifth-year option of wide receiver Quentin Johnston's rookie contract on Tuesday, putting him in line to make $16.5 million in 2027, per Spotrac.
While Los Angeles exercising Johnston's fifth-year option was hardly a foregone conclusion, Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz was complimentary of the wideout when discussing the situation on Jan. 15.
"We haven't had talks about that yet," Hortiz said, per ESPN's Kris Rhim. "Again, it's early, but I'll say this: I love Q and the growth he's made. The development he's made from year one to year three has been awesome to see. I'm a big fan of Q's."
Johnston was selected by Los Angeles with a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft.
He opened his rookie season as a depth option before gradually carving out a role in the Chargers' first-team offense, hauling in 38 receptions for 431 yards and two touchdowns.
Johnston's individual production improved during his sophomore season in 2024, catching 55 passes for 711 yards and eight scores. Still, he struggled with drops and didn't record a single reception on five targets during Los Angeles' defeat at the hands of the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
The 24-year-old looked much sharper during his 2025 campaign, amassing 735 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches while averaging a career-high 14.4 yards per reception. Johnston also dropped just two passes after he was credited with seven drops the prior year.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert owned a 119.3 passer rating when targeting Johnston, according to Pro Football Focus.
Los Angeles is looking to build upon a 2025 season in which it finished with an 11-6 record and advanced to the playoffs, but lost in the Wild Card round for the third time in four years.
It'll be intriguing to see how Johnston fares under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, who was hired to replace Greg Roman following the Chargers' early playoff exit.
As Los Angeles continues to navigate through the offseason, Johnston is now under contract through 2027.
