The film stars Brad Pitt as a former F1 driver who suffered a career-threatening crash early in his career and gets called back to the circuit by his former teammate, who owns a struggling team in need of a push.

Several current F1 stars were involved in the production of the film and have roles as Pitt's competition. Lewis Hamilton appears in the movie and is credited as a producer.

Other F1 drivers who have roles in the movie include Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz Jr. and George Russell.

Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed Top Gun: Maverick to a Best Picture nomination in 2022, helmed this movie. The film was able to replicate an authentic feel of being at an F1 race by shooting several scenes during actual races between the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

F1 was released in theaters in the United States on June 27. It went on to become the ninth-highest grossing movie worldwide in 2025 with $631.7 million in earnings at the box office.

F1 was nominated for a total of four Oscars on Thursday. In addition to Best Picture, it is also up for Best Sound, Best Visual Effects and Best Film Editing.

The 98th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 15. Conan O'Brien will host the ceremony for the second straight year.
