1 Sentence To Describe Every Eliminated NFL Team

Brad GagnonJan 23, 2026

The 2026 NFL offseason has arrived for all but four franchises.

Some are in slightly, or significantly, better shape than others.

Let's summarize each eliminated squad in one sentence.

AFC East

1 of 8
Bills Football
Terry Pegula, left, and Brandon Beane

Buffalo Bills

The fact that Josh Allen went his entire 20s without playing in a Super Bowl is enough to bring on major changes, so finding the right head coach for the quarterback is the obvious pivot.

Miami Dolphins

It's a full-on reset and likely the beginning of a rebuild for a franchise that desperately needs it, but ownership needs to be patient because this is going to take some time.

New York Jets

They're in a tough spot, because this regime probably won't survive another horrible season, but their quarterback options are limited in both the draft and free agency.

AFC North

2 of 8
Ravens Steelers Football
Lamar Jackson

Baltimore Ravens

Just like the Bills, the Ravens parted ways with their long-tenured head coach after their 29-year-old quarterback once again fell short of the Super Bowl in his eighth NFL season—a development that was always in play.

Cincinnati Bengals

It's becoming an obvious make-or-break situation for a team that needs its quarterback to stay healthy and needs more support for the offensive core in order to avoid mass casualties one year from now.

Cleveland Browns

They might have the Defensive Player of the Year and the Defensive Rookie of the Year, and they risk wasting it all in 2026 and beyond if they can't find the right guys to run the offense on the field and on the sideline this offseason.

Pittsburgh Steelers

When you move on from a Hall of Fame coach and quarterback (assuming Aaron Rodgers is done) in the same offseason, it's the definition of a franchise reset.

AFC South

3 of 8
Texans Patriots Football
C.J. Stroud

Houston Texans

It's fair to wonder if C.J. Stroud peaked as a rookie and is now holding a strong defensive team back, but keep in mind he's still just 24 years old.

Indianapolis Colts

It's become an obvious make-or-break scenario for this regime, as well as whoever quarterbacks the offense in 2026.

Jacksonville Jaguars

They have some major calls to make in free agency, but it finally feels as though the Jags are on the right track on both sides of the ball as well as off the field.

Tennessee Titans

Year 2 of the rebuild is underway with Cam Ward and Robert Saleh front and center, and now it's all about what they can do to support the sophomore quarterback ASAP.

Broncos Chiefs Football
Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City Chiefs

The shift from Matt Nagy to Eric Bieniemy will likely be impactful, but it's hard to see the dynasty avoiding its end without a miraculous recovery and bounce-back campaign from a potentially-beyond-his-prime Patrick Mahomes.

Las Vegas Raiders

The slate is relatively blank with the top pick and oodles of salary-cap space, but it's hard to believe they'll suddenly get it right with their 15th head coach since the turn of the century (and sixth in a six-year span, including interim Rich Bisaccia in 2021).

Los Angeles Chargers

A Jim Harbaugh-Mike McDaniel coaching duo would give them a strong brain trust, while a healthier and improved offensive line could take them to the next level in 2026.

NFC East

5 of 8
Cowboys Giants Football
Jerry Jones

Dallas Cowboys

The offensive core, leadership and philosophy is locked in, but what they do on defense—particularly with the coordinator vacancy and their two first-round draft picks—will likely determine if they take a step forward in 2026.

New York Giants

They are hitching their wagon to John Harbaugh and Jaxson Dart, which brings a lot of hope and excitement to a team with lots of young talent elsewhere and the fifth overall pick.

Philadelphia Eagles

Considering the state of the offense under Jalen Hurts and some public frustration on the side, this offensive coordinator hire could have a seismic impact on the future of this core.

Washington Commanders

For this to work in a critical third campaign for Jayden Daniels, they'll need to spend big and bolster the defense in particular this offseason.

NFC North

6 of 8
Packers Bears Football
Matt LaFleur

Chicago Bears

They've got their coach, their quarterback and plenty of talent around them, so it is hard to recall a time when there was this much optimism about Bears football.

Detroit Lions

With zero playoff wins in the last two seasons, it's fair to wonder if something is missing here, and if big changes are necessary despite all of that talent.

Green Bay Packers

With an extension for head coach Matt LaFleur, the Packers—who lack cap space and first-round picks the next two years—have doubled down on the idea that a group centered on LaFleur, Jordan Love and Micah Parsons can finally get over the hump soon.

Minnesota Vikings

They have to be left wondering if they made the wrong call at quarterback last offseason, and with Brian Flores back, this regime and its young signal-caller face a make-or-break 2026 campaign.

NFC South

7 of 8
Buccaneers Dolphins Football
Baker Mayfield

Atlanta Falcons

Kevin Stefanski makes a lot of sense for Atlanta's quest to get it right with Michael Penix Jr., but expect the new regime to move on if 2026 doesn't pan out for the third-year quarterback.

Carolina Panthers

Most of the pieces are in place, and now it's really about seeing how high this core can fly as the key cogs develop with this staff.

New Orleans Saints

With a potential franchise quarterback in place, another top-10 pick in their pocket and cap hell in their rearview mirror, there's light at the end of the tunnel for a rebuilding team that hasn't made the playoffs since 2020.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

With the same veteran coach and quarterback in place but several long-tenured guys drifting away, it feels like there's an obvious ceiling for a team that is neither a contender nor rebuilding.

NFC West

8 of 8
49ers Seahawks Football
Kyle Shanahan

Arizona Cardinals

With no obvious answer at quarterback and a head coaching vacancy, one of the worst teams in the league needs a life ring.

San Francisco 49ers

Their latest injury woes will inevitably creep into 2026, and an aging roster is beginning to pose problems anyway for a team that broadly has to figure out why it is consistently crushed by injuries.
