Zach Ertz, Eagles Reportedly Agree to Contract for Reunion After Goedert Injury, Updated Depth Chart

Zach Ertz is returning to the City of Brotherly Love.

The veteran tight end has reportedly signed with the Philadelphia Eagles to join the practice squad, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, though he likely will see the field before long with Dallas Goedert expected to miss several weeks after suffering a sprained MCL on Sunday.

In fact, Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix reported Ertz is expected to play against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 28.

Ertz will join a tight end room that currently includes Johnny Mundt and E.J. Jenkins with Goedert injured and rookie second-round pick Eli Stowers on injured reserve.

The 35-year-old suffered a season-ending ACL tear in early December, calling into question whether it would be the final moment of his career.

"It breaks my heart when you see a great one like him, an all-time great [get hurt]," Washington Commanders tight end John Bates told reporters after Ertz's injury. "He does everything the right way, the way things should be done. He's just a pro's pro."

"He's one of the linchpins of our team," Terry McLaurin added. "I ain't going to lie; it was tough for everybody."

Ertz has 825 career receptions, the fifth most by a tight end in NFL history. His 116 receptions in the 2018 season with the Eagles was also a single-season NFL record for tight ends before Arizona's Trey McBride broke it this year.

He's added 8,592 receiving yards and 57 touchdowns across 13 seasons in stints for the Eagles (2013-21), Cardinals (2021-23) and Commanders (2024-25).

He recorded 50 catches for 504 yards and four touchdowns across 13 games in 2025. Philly clearly believes he can still be a contributor and needs the help at the position given their early injuries.
