"Brian has a unique ability to connect with players, understand their skill sets, and put them in positions to maximize their impact on the field," Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said as part of the announcement. "The identity of our defense is a reflection of his leadership and preparation. On a personal level, I've really valued the relationship we've built over the last three years, and that shared trust, alignment and high standard will continue to be critical to our success."
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, Flores remains a candidate for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens' head coaching vacancies.
He'll stay with Minnesota if he doesn't land either job, per Pelissero and Rapoport.
Flores received interest for roles identical to his current position in addition to appearing in head coaching searches during the current hiring cycle.
Pelisseroย notedย that Flores had interest from "numerous teams" as a defensive coordinator and interviewed with the Washington Commanders for the role, but his extension ensures that the only way he'll leave Minnesota is if he's hired as a head coach.
He was alsoย linkedย to the Dallas Cowboys' opening at defensive coordinator.
Flores has familiarity with the Steelers, as he served as a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach for Pittsburgh in 2022.
He also met with the Ravens on Jan. 13 andย reportedlyย has a second in-person interview scheduled.
It's easy to see why the two AFC North rivals are interested in Flores, as his tenure in Minnesota has been largely successful.
The Vikingsย rankedย No. 7 in the NFL in scoring defense during the 2025 season, allowing just 19.6 points per game. They also amassed 49 sacks, theย fifth-mostย among all teams.
Flores previously served as head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2019-21, compiling a 24-25 record.
