New Matthew Stafford Rumors Reveal Latest Contract Buzz Before 2026 NFL Draft

Zach BacharApr 20, 2026

The Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford are working toward a new contract, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport reported the two sides "have made significant progress."

Stafford's decision to forgo retirement doesn't come as a major surprise despite his age, as he alluded to continuing to play in 2026 as part of his MVP acceptance speech on Feb. 5.

The 38-year-old previously contemplated retirement at the end of his 2024 campaign, but continued to play.

Stafford is coming off an impressive 2025 campaign with the Rams, leading them to a 12-5 record before falling to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game.

He completed 65.0 percent of his throws for a league-leading 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns compared to a mere eight interceptions, averaging 7.9 yards per attempt. Stafford was named MVP for his efforts.

He also threw for 936 yards and six touchdowns in three playoff games, getting picked off one time.

While Stafford has 17 years of NFL experience under his belt, he hasn't shown too many signs of slowing down as of late.

He's earned Pro Bowl nods in two of the past three seasons, completing over 62 percent of his throws and amassing at least 3,700 yards through the air in each year over that span.

Stafford has already put together an impressive career, winning Super Bowl LVI with the Rams. He ranks No. 6 on both the NFL's all-time pass yards list and the league's all-time completions leaderboard. His 423 passing touchdowns are also the seventh-most among all quarterbacks.

He won't be hanging up the cleats this offseason, though. Depending on the terms of his new contract, this could solidify his future beyond 2026 as well.
