Former NFL Star Osi Umenyiora Reveals He Was in Coma for 5 Days, Needed 'Extensive Surgery'

Former NFL star Osi Umenyiora revealed that he recently overcame a serious health scare.

"I was in the hospital for almost a month," Umenyiora said at the beginning of his show The Breakdown, which airs in Europe, per Anna Lazarus Caplan of People. "I was in a coma for five days, had some extensive surgery. I was in a really, really bad place."

Umenyiora didn't disclose the full details of what exactly led to his hospitalization, but he gestured to his midsection multiple times as he spoke. He also took time to thank the people who supported him, like his wife, Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes, and his co-host, retired NFL cornerback Jason Bell.

"And I find out right then and there who actually loved me because there were some people who showed up every single day," Umenyiora said. "There were some people who came to see me when I was in a coma. There were some people who traveled from all across the world to come see me when I was at my lowest points."

Umenyiora spent the majority of his NFL career with the New York Giants, winning two Super Bowl titles. He and Bell played together for one year in 2006, sparking a friendship that has lasted two decades.

"This man right here was by my side," he said of Bell. "I remember when I got up and I saw him for the first time, I just started crying because I could feel the love."

Umenyiora went on to reveal that Bell's presence had a real impact on him being able to fight out of his coma.

"So don't you ever mistake what we got going on up here for something that's not real because this is real, and I love you, J-Bell," he said. "I really, really appreciate everything you did. They told me that when I heard your voice, my heart rate started to spike, which was absolutely incredible."

The 44-year-old has worked as an NFL analyst in the UK since his retirement in 2015. He and Bell shared a hug in an emotional moment after his revelation.
