NFL Rumors on 'Priority' in Josh Allen, Bills' HC Search After Sean McDermott Firing

Doric SamJan 21, 2026

After firing head coach Sean McDermott this week, the Buffalo Bills are reportedly hoping to find a replacement who can maximize the talent of star quarterback Josh Allen.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported that "sources across the league -- and some within the Bills building" feel that Allen "will be the priority for the next hire." The presence of the 2024 NFL MVP makes Buffalo arguably the most attractive coaching destination this offseason.

"When you look at the big picture with the quarterback, are you changing the offensive system?" one source told Jones. "We know the answer to that."

Jones went on to name three coaching candidates who have close ties to Allen: Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, former Buffalo OC and New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and former Bills backup quarterback and current Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb. It was noted that all of them have been "linked" to the opening in Buffalo by "multiple sources."

Allen is already one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, so there will have to be a concerted effort for the Bills to add talent around him if they want to finally break through and reach the Super Bowl.

Finding a new head coach will be the first step for Buffalo in what's likely to be a pivotal offseason for the future of the franchise.
