Why the Road to WWE WrestleMania 42 Will Define Triple H as a Booker

The 2026 Royal Rumble will open the road to WrestleMania 42 and while it will give fans a taste of what they can expect from this year's Showcase of the Immortals, it will also serve as a defining stretch in Triple H's run as WWE chief content officer.

In 2024, the 14-time world champion presented the first 'Mania of his regime. The Philadelphia-based show featured several stories built over a year of television, utilizing established stars such as Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, CM Punk, and Seth Rollins to elevate the likes of Drew McIntyre, Damian Priest, Sami Zayn, and Kevin Owens to previously unseen levels.

Long-term booking, red-hot stories, characters that fans could relate to and understand, and the culmination of a two-year journey for Rhodes in his match with Reigns, complete with the insertion of The Rock as The Final Boss, helped make that show one of the most anticipated WrestleManias of all time.

The same could not be said for last year's event, though.

The show lacked the forethought and vision of its predecessor. Last-minute booking changes, the ill-fated John Cena heel turn, and The Rock's "is he or isn't he" availability hurt the quality of the storytelling.

While WrestleMania 40 was the culmination of several story threads and the genesis of new ones, the 2025 effort was a mess of colder, shorter-term midcard bouts, along with higher-profile bouts that lacked the lore and heat of the previous year's top contests.

WrestleMania 41 was the first time when criticism of Triple H's booking became more audible, with a common critique being he lost the narrative in Cena's heel turn and there appeared to be less of a plan for other top stories and stars than had been the standard in his creative efforts to that point.

Entering the 2026 show, The Game has the chance to prove last year's road to WrestleMania was the exception, not the rule.

There is still the sense that he has not regained the long-term planning that was such an acclaimed part of what he and WWE accomplished from 2023 through the fall of 2024.

The decision to take the Undisputed WWE Championship off of Rhodes and put it on McIntyre felt rash, as did the tease of a showdown between The American Nightmare and Roman Reigns for a third 'Mania main event with no real follow-up...at least to this point.

Still, months of teases have also pointed to other possible championship clashes and rivalries, from Finn Bálor vs. Dominik Mysterio to CM Punk extending his rivalry with The Vision and Paul Heyman—sparked by The Wise Man's shocking turn at last year's show—and potentially leading to a showdown with Brock Lesnar or a rematch with Bron Breakker.

We do not yet know what form the WrestleMania 42 card will take, but one thing is for certain: The criticisms of Triple H's creative will grow louder if he rolls into Las Vegas and does not deliver a banger.

The goodwill surrounding the arrival of his era as the face of WWE is over. He set the bar incredibly high with his efforts in his first two years, but with the quality of the product from 2023 through the end of 2024 come lofty expectations.

Triple H and his team did not live up to those hopes last year, producing a show that failed to match the excitement of the fans entering it.

Fans will not accept excuses, nor will they settle for condescending suggestions that the creative forces know what's better for business than they do.

The expectations are set by the quality of his previous work. If he fails to live up to them, the questions about his booking will grow louder. Was his work two years ago the standard or was it lightning in a bottle? Does the long-term storytelling, character-driven product that used everyone on the roster represent what he is as a creator?

With WrestleMania 42 returning to Vegas and offering him a rare second chance to deliver in the entertainment capital of the world, the next few weeks will give us the answers and go a long way in shaping the narrative of Triple H's legacy as a booker.
