Baker Mayfield Calls Out Stefanski After QB 'Shipped Off Like a Piece of Garbage,' Eyes Bucs-Falcons

Timothy RappJan 20, 2026

The rivalry between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons just got a whole lot spicier.

Baker Mayfield had some choice words for new Atlanta head coach Kevin Stefanski on Tuesday while responding to a post on social media from D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Mayfield and Stefanski were paired for the 2020-21 seasons in Cleveland. Their first year together was a success—Mayfield threw for 3,563 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions, leading the Browns to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth.

He regressed in 2021, however, throwing for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while taking 43 sacks (though he did deal with multiple injuries that season, including a torn labrum). The Browns were just 6-8 in his starts and finished 8-9 overall. It was a tumultuous season, from Odell Beckham Jr.'s breakup with the team to fans booing him during games.

Mayfield then had a rough stint with the Carolina Panthers in 2022 (1,313 yards, six touchdowns, six picks, 1-5 record as the starter) and a late-season cameo with the Los Angeles Rams. But he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of the 2023 season and has been a man reborn, earning a pair of Pro Bowl nods and two postseason appearances in Tampa.

While the Bucs took a step back in 2025, going just 8-9 in an injury-ravaged campaign, the 30-year-old has clearly found his long-term home. And now he'll get to face Stefanski twice a season.

The Falcons are hoping their new hire can help a talented but underachieving roster take the next step. The Falcons haven't had a winning season since 2017 and are coming off back-to-back 8-9 campaigns. They have a number of promising players and the NFC South is one of the more wide-open divisions in football, so the hope is that Stefanski can turn them into a true contender.

Mayfield will be one of the people hoping to stand in his way.
