New NFL Rumors Reveal Sean McDermott's Criticism of Bills Roster in Weeks Before Firing as HC

Julia StumbaughJan 20, 2026

Sean McDermott reportedly criticized the Buffalo Bills' roster building to general manager Brandon Beane and owner Terry Pegula five weeks before he was fired as head coach, according to WGRZ's Vic Carucci.

Carucci wrote Tuesday that the criticism took place during a meeting in which McDermott "pointed out what the roster lacked to win a Super Bowl."

"I don't know the specifics McDermott mentioned, but I'm told neither Beane nor Pegula was pleased with McDermott's assessment," Carucci wrote.

The Bills were eliminated from the divisional round last Saturday with an overtime loss to the Denver Broncos. McDermott was fired two days later.

Buffalo's loss to the Broncos highlighted both Allen's struggles in the clutch and team's lack of a No. 1 receiver, a depth issue which Beane passionately defended following the 2025 draft.

The Bills have ranked top-nine in total offensive yards over the last two seasons, while leaning on star running back James Cook and finishing among the bottom seven teams in terms of pass attempts.

It may be solely up to Beane to address those roster weaknesses in 2026. Pegula said in his statement about McDermott's firing that Beane would be promoted to "oversee all facets of our football operation, including the oversight of our coaching staff."

His new job as president of football operations will begin with a search for the Bills' next head coach. Beane may need to act fast now that four head coaching candidates, including two high-profile names in the New York Giants' John Harbaugh and Atlanta Falcons' Kevin Stefanski, are already off the board.

Beane will then turn his attention to the 2026 NFL draft this April in Pittsburgh, where the Bills are slated to make seven picks starting at No. 26.
