Naomi Osaka Wears Exoskeletal-Inspired Outfit in Photos for Australian Open Entrance

Naomi Osaka made her presence felt at the Australian Open with a grand entrance that included an exoskeletal-inspired look.

The 28-year-old entered Rod Laver Arena prior to her match against Antonia Ružić wearing a custom Robert Wun-designed outfit.

Speaking to Hannah Jackson of Vogue, Osaka explained the idea for the outfit came from the image of a jellyfish in a book that she was reading to her two-year-old daughter.

"There was an image of a jellyfish, and when I showed it to her she got so excited," Osaka said.

According to Jackson, Osaka took her idea to the people at Nike and the apparel giant came up with a design that incorporated the jellyfish's look into her on-court gear.

"It translated beautifully into the movement and fluidity of the sheer layers on the dress and the jacket," Osaka said. "When I saw it during the fitting, I remember thinking, 'this is beautiful,' but also feeling like the story wasn't fully finished yet."

Wun, whose list of fellow collaborators includes Beyoncé, Adele, and Ariana Grande, helped to flesh out the idea by also incorporating a butterfly into the mix that was inspired in part by the moment at the 2021 Australian Open when one of the winged insects landed on Osaka's leg during a match.

Osaka explained to Jackson that both the jellyfish and butterfly "felt symbolic of energy, transformation, and excitement."

The look served Osaka well, as she defeated Ružić in three sets to advance to the second round of the Australian Open. She will be back in action on Wednesday against Sorana Cîrstea.
