Venus Williams Makes History at Australian Open, Which Record Did Tennis Legend Break?
Venus Williams didn't have an extended stay in the 2026 Australian Open women's singles draw, but it was long enough to make history.
At 45, she became the oldest singles player ever to compete in the tournament.
Williams came up short against Olga Danilovic in the opening round, though, losing 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4.
The two-time runner-up got fans excited when she hit a forehand winner to claim the first set.
After Danilovic fought back in the second to tie the match at one set apiece, Williams jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third and final frame. Her momentum quickly ground to a halt.
The beginning of the end came when Danilovic broke Williams' serve to jump ahead 5-4. The game lasted for 21 points and more than 14 minutes, ending with an unforced error on a backhand by Williams.
The legendary star was ultimately undone by her serve. She committed five double faults and won just 34 percent of her second-service points. Danilovic registered 12 return winners.
"It was such a great game, such a great moment," Williams said after her defeat. "The energy from the crowd was amazing. That lifted me up so much. She played a great game. Also some luck there, as well. That's just the sport. That's how it works sometimes."
A date with No. 3 seed Coco Gauff or Kamilla Rakhimova awaits Danilovic in the next round.
