Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
Jon Heyman of the New York Post previously reported the Yankees were among the teams interested in Bichette.
He ended up joining the Mets on a three-year contract worth $126 million, though.
The contract also includes opt-outs after each of the first two years, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Still, the Yankees were far from the only club that failed to add Bichette.
Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported the Philadelphia Phillies offered him a seven-year contract worth "somewhere in the range" of $190 million to $200 million, but weren't willing to hand out a short-term deal.
The Mets were eventually able to bring in Bichette to boost their lineup after missing out on Kyle Tucker, who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.
Bichette is coming off an impressive 2025 campaign with the Toronto Blue Jays, hitting .311 with 18 home runs and 44 doubles to go along with 94 RBI. He also posted an OPS of .840.
In seven postseason appearances during Toronto's run to the 2025 World Series, Bichette slashed .348/.444/.478 with six runs batted in.
The Yankees will now continue their attempts to bring back Cody Bellinger in free agency, although Heyman reported Monday that the length of a future contract was a sticking point in negotiations.
Both New York teams could enter a bidding war for Bellinger, as he's also been linked to the Mets.
It isn't difficult to imagine Sabathia, who suited up for the Bronx Bombers from 2009-19, having a similar reaction if Bellinger heads to the Mets instead of the Yankees.
