Chiefs Reportedly Fire 2 Coaches After Missing NFL Playoffs, Latest Rumors on Matt Nagy

Julia StumbaughJan 15, 2026

The Kansas City Chiefs are making some offensive staffing changes ahead of head coach Andy Reid's 14th season with the franchise.

The Chiefs have fired running backs coach Todd Pinkston and wide receivers coach Connor Embree, Sam McDowell reported Thursday for the Kansas City Star.

The news comes as Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy interviews for head coaching jobs with teams including the Baltimore Ravens, Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders and Tennessee Titans.

Nagy could be leaving Kansas City regardless of if he is ultimately hired as a head coach. According to McDowell, "if Nagy strikes out in his head coach interviews, he's still expected to pursue other opportunities where he can serve as a primary play-caller."

Reid, the longest-tenured coach in the NFL following the recent dismissals of John Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin, has served as the Chiefs' primary play caller for 13 seasons.

The Chiefs started out the season 5-4 before collapsing down the stretch.

Kansas City went 1-7 over the back half of the season, during which they lost star quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a torn ACL and were eliminated from playoff contention ahead of Week 16.

Pinkston had coached the Chiefs running backs for three seasons, including the franchise's back-to-back Super Bowl runs after the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

The Chiefs most finished the 2025 season ranked 25th in the NFL in both rushing attempts and rushing yards.

Embree had also served as wide receivers coach for three seasons. The Chiefs' passing offense also dipped in 2025, which the team finished ranked 16th in passing yards and 21st in passing touchdowns.

Those aren't the only staffing changes the Chiefs are making ahead of the 2026 season.

The Chiefs also recently parted ways with Louis Addazio, who had worked with the team for two seasons and most recently served as a defensive quality control coach before joining UNLV as an offensive line coach.

Alex Whittingham left after five years as a defensive assistant to join his father, Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham, as the Wolverines' linebackers coach.

The Chiefs will look to have their new members of the staff in place by the time Mahomes returns from injury. The quarterback said Thursday he hopes to be ready to play without limitations by Week 1 of the 2026 campaign.
