Russell Wilson Re-Signs with Seahawks: Twitter Reacts to Star QB's New Contract

Mike ChiariJul 31, 2015

After months of negotiations, the Seattle Seahawks and star quarterback Russell Wilson finally agreed to terms on a contract extension Friday ahead of Wilson's pre-training camp deadline.

The new deal is worth $87.6 million over four years with $60 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. With Seattle making such a big commitment, there has naturally been plenty of reaction via social media.

Wilson was among the first to chime in as the 26-year-old signal-caller expressed how grateful he was to finally reach a resolution:

The two-time Pro Bowler also received his fair share of congratulatory messages, including one from ESPN analyst Damien Woody:

Wilson also received congratulations from his girlfriend Ciara:

There has been plenty of back and forth in recent weeks with regard to how the contract would be structured, but many seemed to feel that the deal should benefit both sides.

Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com thinks the Seahawks and Wilson achieved that balance due to the four-year term:

Not only will that allow Wilson to become a free agent while firmly in his prime, but it also gives the Seahawks some protection if the former NC State and Wisconsin standout gets injured or regresses.

Even though the agreement is only for four years, Will Brinson of CBS Sports was surprised by how much financial security Wilson got out of it:

Per ESPN Stats and Info, that puts Wilson in some great company:

At the same time, ESPN's Andrew Brandt viewed it as a relative bargain from Seattle's perspective since the price easily could have gone up after the 2015 campaign:

Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network wondered what the deal would mean for another promising young quarterback:

Considering the fact that Wilson had one year left on his previous contract at around $1.5 million, according to Spotrac.com, ESPN's Trey Wingo reckons the dual-threat quarterback couldn't be much happier:

SportsNation pointed out Wilson would be coming to camp with some new accessories after signing the deal:

Wilson's stats don't jump off the page as elite numbers similar to the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Tom Brady, but it is difficult to ignore the obvious impact he has had on the Seahawks since they selected him with the No. 75 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

He has led Seattle to consecutive Super Bowls, including a championship two seasons ago. He has also enjoyed unprecedented success when compared to other quarterbacks with his level of experience, per ESPN Stats & Info:

Because of Wilson's penchant for winning games, Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman has no doubt the Seahawks made the right decision:

One aspect with regard to the contract that many have overlooked is the notion that Wilson will likely be motivated in 2015 and beyond. Many players would rest on their laurels after reaching consecutive Super Bowls and landing a massive deal, but Wilson doesn't seem to be that type of guy.

Wilson received plenty of blame for the Seahawks losing the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots since his goal-line interception sealed the game. Seattle showed its trust in Wilson despite that, and he'll likely do everything possible to prove the Seahawks right.

Wilson has been the perfect quarterback and leader since entering the league for a Seahawks team that will once again compete for a title in 2015. If he continues to play like he has to this point in his NFL career, the Seahawks may have ensured their status as one of the league's top teams for many years to come.
