Latest Steelers HC Rumors, Interview Requests After Mike Tomlin Steps Down

Julia StumbaughJan 20, 2026

The Pittsburgh Steelers are well underway in their search for Mike Tomlin's replacement.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported Monday that former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy will meet with the Steelers on Wednesday about the position. ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the two sides were expected to discuss the opening.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Monday that Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver is expected to have a second interview this week.

Schefter previously reported the Steelers requested interviews with Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase and defensive coordinator Chris Shula.

Additionally, the Steelers submitted an interview request for San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, per The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has also been requested for an interview, Pelissero reported.

Brian Flores was added to the team's search, as was the Green Bay Packers' Jeff Hafley:

Scheelhaase has also received interest from the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders, per Schefter.

The Raiders and Arizona Cardinals also have their eyes on Shula as well, according to Schefter.

The Steelers will now join both lists one day after Tomlin announced he would be stepping down as head coach following 19 seasons with the franchise.

The Rams, one of eight teams still remaining in the 2025 postseason, are currently preparing for a Sunday divisional round matchup with the Chicago Bears. Shula and Scheelhaase have still been available to interview virtually since Tuesday.

Scheelhaase is becoming a popular name in head coaching rumors after helping the Rams lead the NFL in both passing yards and passing touchdowns during his first season as pass game coordinator in 2025.

The strength of the Rams' passing game was on display during Saturday's Wild Card win over the Carolina Panthers, when Matthew Stafford went 6-for-7 with 71 yards on a clutch game-winning fourth quarter drive.

Shula is meanwhile in his second season as the Rams' defensive coordinator, during which he has helped Los Angeles build one of the best run defenses in the NFL.

His unit allowed the 10th-fewest points, 12-fewest rushing yards and the fewest rushing touchdowns in the NFL this season.

Steelers president Art Rooney II said during a Wednesday press conference he didn't expect his team to look for Tomlin's replacement on his current staff.

He also said he felt Tomlin's decision to step away as head coach would impact quarterback Aaron Rodgers' future with the team.

Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin's contract expires after the 2025 campaign, and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is reportedly interviewing for other head coaching jobs.

Whoever is ultimately hired as the next head coach in Pittsburgh could potentially get the chance to not only bring in their own staff but start over with another quarterback in 2026.
