Alex Bregman's Cubs Jersey Number Revealed After $175M Contract in MLB Free Agency
Now that Alex Bregman's five-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs is official, the three-time All-Star had to pick a new jersey number for the first time in his MLB career.
Since Nico Hoerner currently wears No. 2 for the Cubs, Bregman kept things simple by just taking No. 3.

Bregman told reporters he chose to wear No. 3 "Because I wanted a third championship."
Bregman specifically chose No. 2 to begin his pro career after being drafted second overall by the Houston Astros in 2015, one spot after now-current teammate Dansby Swanson was taken with the top pick by the Atlanta Braves.
The Cubs have made their way through many of the best players in the 2015 draft. Swanson is entering his fourth season with the North Siders after signing a seven-year, $177 million deal in December 2022.
Kyle Tucker, the No. 5 overall pick in 2015, spent last season with the Cubs after being acquired in a trade with the Houston Astros.
The Cubs also have Ian Happ, their top pick (No. 9 overall) from that draft class, still on their roster.
Bregman is arguably the most accomplished player from that group. He is a three-time All-Star, won two World Series titles with the Astros and finished in the top 20 in AL MVP voting four times from 2018 to '23.
Chicago will be hoping that Bregman can make that type of impact on its roster in 2026 and beyond as the franchise looks to get back to the top of the NL Central after finishing second to the Milwaukee Brewers in each of the past three years.
The Cubs haven't advanced beyond the NLDS since 2017 when they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
