NFL Draft 2026 Scouting Report for Texas S Michael Taaffe

Daniel HarmsFeb 2, 2026

One of the best stories in College Football, Michael Taaffe turned pure determination, work ethic, and execution into an impressive collegiate and a soon-to-be NFL career. A jack-of-all-trades on defense, he consistently performs at a high level and is a great communicator on the field.

The former walk-on at Texas earned 2024 Associated Press All-America Second Team honors while compiling 222 tackles (119 solo), three sacks, nine and a half tackles for loss, seven interceptions, and 14 passes defensed throughout his Longhorn career.

He brings a core special-teams presence to an NFL team who can quickly work into a defensive rotation.

Dan has covered the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL Draft since 2019 while contributing for RGR Football. Most recently, he spent the 2025 draft cycle at The Draft Network and is entering his first season in our scouting department.

Where He Wins

2 of 5
Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic - Ohio State v Texas

— Taaffe is an excellent communicator in the defense pre- and post-snap. He lines up his teammates, passes off routes, and handles motions with ease. He's a leader on and off the field, and it shows.

— Smooth backpedal and change of direction athletic ability shows up every snap with his quarterback mirroring and handling of defensive rotations. He's a well-studied player who excels at handling zone-matching concepts.

— The 6'0", 189-pound safety keeps his head on a swivel and navigates traffic underneath as a robber or nickel well while recognizing route concepts from a single-high or two-high alignment.

— He possesses an excellent work ethic and will bring an added special teams floor with over 500 special teams snaps in his collegiate career. He's a glue guy.

Areas of Improvement

3 of 5
Texas v Georgia

— Taaffe struggles to tackle one-on-one in space, and with his size, doesn't have the consistency to drive through powerful runners. He overruns pursuit angles in the box, which creates easy-to-break arm tackles.

— He lacks recovery speed when beaten downfield and in man coverage; that translates to his range as a post safety and trigger downhill.

— Not an overly explosive mover, he needs to rely on anticipation and the quarterback's eyes to take him to the ball, and his instincts are still a work in progress.

— While he recognizes run concepts well and isn't afraid to mix it up in the box, he lacks the physicality to contribute in the run game. He gets swallowed up by blocks and falls to the ground too often.
