Ryan Weathers Traded to Yankees From Marlins, NYY's Updated 2026 Rotation

Andrew PetersJan 13, 2026

The New York Yankees have bolstered their rotation as they look to compete for a World Series in 2026.

The Yankees have acquired left handed pitcher Ryan Weathers from the Miami Marlins in return for outfielder Dillon Lewis, outfielder Brendan Jones, infielder Dillon Jason and infielder Juan Matheus.

Here's a look at the Yankees projected rotation following the trade.

Weathers was the No. 7 overall pick in 2018 by the San Diego Padres and made his way into the rotation in less than three years. After two and a half seasons with the Padres, he was dealt to the Marlins at the 2023 trade deadline.

Unfortunately for Weathers, injuries have held him back in the early stages of his career. He's pitched just 24 starts and 125 innings over the last two years because of various injuries. Last year, he landed on the 60-day injured list in June because of a lat strain.

In eight appearances in 2025, Weathers recorded a 3.99 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 37 strikeouts. When healthy, Weathers can be a solid piece in the rotation, but whether he'll be able to play a full season for the Yankees in 2026 is a big question mark.

The good news for the Yankees is that Weathers isn't exactly a huge financial commitment. In his first year of arbitration eligibility this offseason, he and the Marlins settled on a $1.35 million salary, so New York won't take on too much with his addition. He also has a minor league option in his contract.

The Yankees are set to be without Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón to start the season and Clarke Schmidt could miss the entire year after undergoing Tommy John surgery in July.

Weathers gives New York some relief as it works those players back into the mix.
