Commanders Rumors on Brian Flores, Updated Targets for DC Search After Joe Whitt Jr. Firing
After firing defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. last week, the Washington Commanders are reportedly taking a big swing for his potential replacement.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the Commanders are "hoping to interview" Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, whose contract ended this year.
Flores is one of the most respected defensive minds in the NFL, and he could have the chance to make the jump to the head coaching ranks once again. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported last week that the Baltimore Ravens requested to interview him for their opening following the firing of head coach John Harbaugh.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
After serving as head coach of the Miami Dolphins from 2019 to 2021, Flores returned to his roots on the defensive coaching staff for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022 before joining the Vikings as defensive coordinator the following year. Under his guidance, Minnesota developed into one of the top defensive units in the league, ranking third this season with 282.6 total yards allowed per game.
The Commanders could certainly use a leader of Flores' caliber, as they were on the opposite end of the spectrum by ranking last in the league with an average of 384.0 yards allowed. Whitt faced criticisms throughout the year, especially during an eight-game losing streak in which Washington surrendered over 20 points in seven of those outings.
Getting Flores would be a major upgrade for the Commanders, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he foregoes that opportunity and wants to pursue a head coaching role this offseason.
