Brett Phillips, Domingo Santana, More to Brewers: Trade Details, Scouting Report

Joe PantornoJul 30, 2015

Carlos Gomez's time in Milwaukee may have been up as the Brewers looked to stock their talent pool, but in dealing their star center fielder, they might have acquired another in return with Brett Phillips. Along with the prospective center fielder, the Brewers also acquired  Domingo Santana, Josh Hader and Adrian Houser from the Houston Astros, as reported by Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal

A center fielder, Phillips was the second-ranked prospect in the Astros farm system behind recently drafted shortstop Alex Bregman, according to MLBPipeline.com.

In 97 games in the minor leagues this season in which he transferred from Single-A to Double-A ball, Phillips has shown his all-around capabilities with a .320 average to go with 16 home runs and 71 RBI. With such power, he also delivers a great amount of speed, adding 15 stolen bases and 11 triples.

ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick has been told what Phillips is capable of:

With a long, powerful swing, it is apparent that Phillips' strength is in the pull as he seems destined to find the right field bleachers plenty throughout his career. But he is capable of shortening up that swing and sending the ball the other way, as FanGraphs takes a look at his swing:

He is not the only big talent the Brewers will be receiving. Left fielder Domingo Santana, the seventh-ranked prospect in the Astros system, is also headed to Milwaukee. The oldest of the group dealt to the Brewers, Santana is just 22 years old and has spent some time with the big league club, appearing in 14 games in which he hit .256 with two home runs and eight RBI.

While he might not be quite ready for the majors just yet, he has shown plenty of promise in Triple-A this season, batting .320 with 16 home runs and 59 RBI in 75 games.

Santana should have no problem finding success once he finds playing time at Miller Park. He was described by Vince Lara-Cinisomo of Baseball America as the "prototypical right-handed slugger."

Of the two pitchers the Brewers receive, Hader was the only one ranked within Houston's top 20 prospects. Playing in Double-A this season, Hader is 3-3 with a 3.17 ERA in 65.1 innings pitched, but he still has plenty of developing to do, according to Baseball America's Ben Badler:

Also in Double-A, Houser was promoted after eight starts in advanced Single-A ball. His numbers don't necessarily jump off the page, though. Houser is 3-4 in total this season with a 5.10 ERA. Life in Double-A hasn't been as easy on him, as he sports a 6.21 ERA in five starts.

But he is showing improvement, especially after the 2014 season, according to Baseball America's J.J. Cooper.

"Adrian Houser took a big step forward this year with plenty of velo (93-95) and a curve that morphed into a slider/cutter," Cooper wrote.

Santana, Hader and Houser will report to Triple-A while Phillips goes to Double-A, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. And while Santana seems the most MLB-ready, the Brewers now have plenty to look forward to in the future as they try to trudge through a 2015 season that sees them sitting in last place in the National League Central, 20.5 games behind the division-leading St. Louis Cardinals.
