Jets Rumors Hint at Tanner Engstrand's Future as OC on Aaron Glenn's Staff

Doric SamJan 7, 2026

The New York Jets are already in search of a new defensive coordinator after firing Steve Wilks during the season, but it doesn't sound like another major change is coming.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that his "early sense" is that the Jets keep offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, and "staff changes on offense could be on the way" instead. Still, Fowler noted that "anything feels possible after a truly horrific passing game performance."

Engstrand was hand-picked by first-year head coach Aaron Glenn to accompany him from the Detroit Lions to New York. While the Jets ranked 10th in the league in rushing offense at 123.3 yards per game, an inept passing attack caused them to finish 29th in the league in total offense with 263.6 yards per game.

While Engstrand made his fair share of mistakes, the Jets' struggles once again can be traced back to their inability to secure a franchise quarterback. Justin Fields wasn't the answer and was benched before the year was over. Veteran backup Tyrod Taylor was hindered by injuries once again, and undrafted free agent Brady Cook struggled overall after some early flashes of potential.

It would be wise for the Jets to pursue some veteran offensive coaches to support Engstrand as Glenn and company try to bounce back from a disastrous 3-14 finish to their first season in New York.
