Mike ChiariJan 7, 2026

Derek Sprague announced Wednesday that he is stepping down from his post as the PGA of America CEO just one year after taking the job.

Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Sprague released a statement regarding his departure, noting that it was due to his need to be close to home so he can administer care to his mother and mother-in-law.

"At my daughter's wedding last month in upstate New York, it became clear that my family needs me nearby to assist with the care of my mother and mother-in-law," Sprague said. "Focusing on family has become my priority, and the best decision for me is to step away from my role as CEO and return home to be with them."

Sprague was named the PGA of America CEO in January 2025, taking over for Seth Waugh.

Per the AP, Sprague was the PGA president from 2014 to 2016, and he became the first club professional to be named PGA of America CEO in two decades.

Upon his hiring, the Associated Press (h/t PGATour.com) noted that Sprague was a PGA of America member since 1993 and served as the general manager of the TPC Sawgrass before taking the CEO position.

Sprague was also the general manager and director of golf at his hometown course, Malone Golf Club.

During his one year as the PGA of America CEO, Sprague oversaw the Ryder Cup and the PGA Championship.

Europe defeated the United States 15-13 in the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York, while Scottie Scheffler won the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, marking his third of four career major titles.

According to the AP, Sprague has said he will stay with the PGA of America in an advisory role until a new CEO is named. The PGA of America plans to announce his successor "in the coming weeks."
