Former Cowboys HC Jason Garrett Reportedly Among Titans Candidates

Scott PolacekJan 9, 2026

The Tennessee Titans have cast a wide net for candidates to be the team's next head coach.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that the Titans have submitted interview requests for Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula and Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.

Rapoport previously reported on Tuesday that the Titans plan to interview Garrett for their head coaching vacancy Friday. While Garrett has recently worked with NBC as a broadcaster, he was the former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2010 through 2019.

Tennessee seems to be casting a wide net, as Rapoport previously reported it requested or scheduled interviews with Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, former Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Titans also requested an interview with Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

All of those candidates have been in coaching more recently than Garrett, who was last with a team during the 2021 season as the offensive coordinator of the New York Giants.

New York missed the playoffs in each of his two seasons as OC and finished with a combined record of 10-23. It also finished an abysmal 31st in the league in points and yards in each of those seasons.

His time as the head coach of Dallas was more successful, as he went 85-67 overall. However, that record was bolstered by 13-3 and 12-4 seasons, as he made the playoffs just three times in his 10 years.

Garrett also never advanced past the Divisional Round of the postseason during his tenure.

Yet he has an offensive background and is someone who could help maximize quarterback Cam Ward's overall potential. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NFL draft had an up-and-down rookie season while going 3-14 but also flashing his potential at times.

Ward's ability to live up to the expectations that were put in place when the Titans drafted him will go a long way toward determining how competitive the team will be in the immediate future regardless of who it hires.

And the ability to work with quarterbacks is something that will surely come up in every coaching interview, which could work in Garrett's favor considering he played quarterback in the NFL before his coaching career.
