Kyler Murray Shows Love to Jonathan Gannon After Cardinals Firing in Social Media Post

Scott PolacekJan 5, 2026

While the Arizona Cardinals fired head coach Jonathan Gannon on Monday, he still has the support of his former quarterback.

Kyler Murray took to social media after Gannon was fired and called Gannon "my guy" while adding he "genuinely loved going to war" with the coach and appreciated all his efforts:

Murray showing Gannon so much love is notable, as the coach arrived at Arizona ahead of the 2023 campaign with a defensive background. He was the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 and 2022 and helped lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance.

However, he clearly made an impact on the most notable player on Arizona's offense during his three seasons as head coach.

Things did not go as hoped for Gannon with the Cardinals, as he finished with a 15-36 record across his three seasons. They did not make the playoffs a single time, and their 8-9 record in 2024 ended up being the best mark of his tenure.

Yet Murray's durability was part of the issue.

He appeared in just eight games in 2023 and five games this past season, which largely prevented the Arizona offense from establishing sustained consistency during Gannon's tenure. He was solid in 2024 and completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 3,851 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Murray also added 572 yards and five scores on the ground as a runner that season.

The question now is whether the Cardinals will move on from Murray as well or bring him back as their starting quarterback in 2026. ESPN's Josh Weinfuss reported on Sunday that the team will have those conversations "in the next couple of weeks."

Weinfuss also added, "There's a growing sense that the Cardinals could run it back with Murray in 2026. That wasn't the feeling a few weeks ago, when it felt certain Arizona will be parting ways with Murray, but that's changed over the last couple of weeks."

If that becomes a reality, the quarterback will be working with another coach after the organization's decision Monday.
